Field Hockey Drops 5-0 Decision to Framingham

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The visiting Framingham State University field hockey team posted a 5-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) win over Bridgewater State University on Friday afternoon at Mazzaferro Field.

The Rams, who swept the season series, improve to 9-6 on the season and 5-3 in the MASCAC while the Bears fall to 4-9-1 overall and 1-7 in conference play. Bridgewater is 32-13 versus the Rams since 1983. Framingham, however, has won each of the last three meetings including a 4-3 win earlier this season at Maple Street Field.

Framingham senior forward Brandi Core (Medway, Mass.) opened the scoring with 2:34 remaining in the first quarter. Core collected an off-target shot by graduate midfielder Isabella Kondi (Canaan, N.H.) on the left side of the net and slipped a backhander by the BSU keeper and inside the left post. The goal marked Core's eighth of the season.

The first half was fairly evenly played with Framingham holding a slight 6-5 edge in shots with penalty corners even at three apiece.

Junior forward Kaylee Beck (Tyngsboro, Mass.) scored off a penalty corner 3:20 into the third quarter to extend the Rams' lead to 2-0. Stationed in front of the net, Beck received a pass from senior midfielder Avery Guiel (Westfield, Mass.), spun to her forehand and fired a shot past the BSU netminder who was well out of the net.

Freshman midfielder Ashley Malmquist (Medfield, Mass.) made it a 3-0 game with just 44 seconds showing on the scoreboard. Off a centering pass from Kondi, Malmquist stickhandled around the charging goaltender and tapped a backhander into the wide-open left side of the cage.

Malmquist potted her team-leading tenth goal of the season in the 55th minute to increase the Rams' advantage to 4-0 as she blasted a shot into the right side of the net from just inside the circle off a penalty corner. Kondi picked up her third assist of the afternoon.

Just 27 seconds later, Beck rifled a shot inside the left post off a nice feed from Malmquist to cap off the scoring . For Beck, the goal marked her seventh of the 2023 campaign.

Framingham finished with a 13-11 shot advantage for the game while Bridgewater held a 12-8 edge in penalty corner attempts.

FSU freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Tello (Nashua, N.H.) made five saves to record her ninth win of the season and third shutout. Freshman netminder Kailey Hutchinson (Attleboro, Mass.) turned aside one shot between the pipes for Bridgewater State.

The MASCAC schedule continues next week. The travel to Westfield State University on Tuesday night to take on the Owls at seven o'clock while the Rams host the Lancers of Worcester State University on Wednesday night also at seven.
