Field Hockey Drops 2-0 MASCAC Decision to Worcester State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The visiting Worcester State University field hockey team posted a 2-0 shutout victory over Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) foe Bridgewater State University on Saturday at Mazzaferro Field.

The Lancers improve to 3-4 on the season and 2-0 in the MASCAC while the Bears fall to 2-4-1 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Worcester has won each of the last four meetings of the two teams. Bridgewater State is 24-20 versus the Lancers since 1983.

The game was scoreless at the break. The Lancers had a potential goal by sophomore midfielder Charlotte MacGregor (Bellingham, Mass.) waived off in the first quarter due to an infraction. BSU freshman midfielder Abbie Zuber (Westport, Mass.) hit the post off a penalty corner three minutes into the second quarter.

The Lancers got on the board 4:21 into third quarter. Off a penalty corner, a close range shot by senior forward Zoe Athanasopoulos (Hopedale, Mass.) was stopped by the right pad of BSU freshman keeper Kailey Hutchinson (Attleboro, Mass.). The rebound popped up in the air and junior midfielder Madison Avilla (Westport, Mass.) batted the ball into the back into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

Senior forward Grace Adams (Leominster, Mass.) blasted a shot just inside the left post from the top of circle to extend the Worcester lead to 2-0 with 3:23 left to play. The goal marked Adams' second marker of the 2023 campaign.

The Lancers held a 20-14 shot advantage for the game, while the Bears finished with a 17-14 edge in penalty corner attempts.

Worcester junior netminder Madison Ferrara (Somerset, Mass.) made six saves to record her second win and second shutout of the season. Hutchinson finished with five saves between the pipes for Bridgewater.

The MASCAC schedule continues for both teams on Tuesday. The Bears travel to Framingham State University to take on the Rams at 4:30 while the Lancers host the Falcons of Fitchburg State University at seven.
