Field Hockey Plays to 1-1 Draw in Lightning-Shortened Affair

MANSFIELD, Conn. -- The visiting Bridgewater State University played to a 1-1 draw with Eastern Connecticut on Saturday afternoon at Rick McCarthy Field in a game that was stopped due to lightning.

Both teams are now 1-1-1 on the young season. Eastern had won each of the last four meetings of the two teams before today's tie.

After a scoreless first half, senior forward Zoe Bergeron (Blackstone, Mass.) staked the visitors to a 1-0 lead with her second goal of the season. Bergeron scored off the rebound of a Madison Ellis (Fr., Attleboro, Mass.) shot following a penalty corner.

ECSU senior midfielder Jakhelin Cota (Norwalk, Conn.) potted an unassisted tally just 71 seconds later to knot the score at 1-1.

The game remained that way until 4:59 into the fourth quarter when lightining put an end to the afternoon's festivities.

Eastern held a decided 14-4 shot advantage for the game as well as a 12-2 edge in penalty corner attempts.

Sophomore goaltender Catherine Daoulas (Marshfield, Mass.) played very well in her first collegiate start between the pipes for the Bears as she made eight saves.

Sophomore netminder Hannah Jalowiec (Cheshire, Conn.) played the first 30 minutes in goal for the Warriors and turnerd aside the only shot she faced. Junior Kiana Webster (Raymond, Maine) came on in relief after the break and did not record a save in just under 20 minutes of action.
