Field Hockey Blanks Dean, 4-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Sophomore forward Brianna Gagnon (Tewksbury, Mass.) potted a pair of goals and freshman midfielder Madison Ellis (Attleboro, Mass.) notched her first collegiate goal and added three assists to lead the visiting Bridgewater State University field hockey team to a 4-0 shutout victory over Dean College on Wednesday afternoon at Grant Field.

The Bears improve to 1-1 on the young season while the Bulldogs fall to 0-3. The two teams have met each of the last three seasons with Bridgewater State winning all three contests by a combined score of 11-0.

The Bears got on the board with 2:48 remaining in the first quarter as Ellis stickhandled in from the right side and fired an off target shot towards the far post that was redirected in by Gagnon.

Bridgewater extended the lead to 2-0 midway through the second period. Gagnon's shot from the top of the circle off a penalty corner was tipped in by senior forward Zoe Bergeron (Blackstone, Mass.).

Less than three minutes into the third quarter, Ellis collected a loose ball following an attempted centering pass from graduate forward Jordyn Perry (Nantucket, Mass.) and buried a shot into a wide-open cage to make it a 3-0 game.

Just over two minutes later, Gagnon beat the keeper through the five-hole with a shot from the left side off a nice feed from Ellis to cap off the scoring.

Freshman netminder Kailey Hutchinson (Attleboro, Mass.) and sophomore goalkeeper Catherine Daoulas (Marshfield, Mass.) combined on the shutout for the Bears as they each played 30 minutes. Daoulas, who was her collegiate debut, stopped the Bulldogs lone shot of the game. Hutchinson picked up her first collegiate victory.

The Bears outshot the Bulldogs by a decided margin of 21-1 and held an 8-0 edge in penalty corner attempts.

Senior goaltender Mackenzie Fillion (New Bedford, Mass.) turned aside 12 shots in the setback for Dean.

In upcoming action, the Bears travel to Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon for a one o'clock game with the Warriors. The Bulldogs entertain Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) rival Colby-Sawyer College on Friday afternoon at four.
