Field Hockey Drops 3-1 LEC Decision to Worcester State

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University field hockey team erased a 1-0 halftime deficit with three second half goals as the Lancers downed visiting Bridgewater State University, 3-1, in a Little East Conference (LEC) matchup on Tuesday night at rainy Coughlin Memorial Field.

The Lancers improve to 12-6 on the season and 9-2 in the Little East, while the Bears slip to 2-14 overall and 1-10 in conference play. Worcester State has won each of the last three meetings of the two teams, and the Lancers are 19-24 versus the Bears since 1983.

Senior forward Bailey Turner (Dedham, Mass.) converted off a penalty corner to give the Bears a 1-0 lead 2:43 into the second quarter. Off a centering pass from junior forward Zoe Bergeron (Blackstone, Mass.), Turner buried a shot through a maze of defenders and inside the right post for her second goal of the season.

That would be the only scoring of the first half as the visitors took the one-goal lead into the break.

Senior forward Karalyn Jones (Wilbraham, Mass.) knotted the game at 1-1 midway through the third quarter with her eighth goal of the season. Jones redirected a backhanded shot by sophomore forward Natalyn Morin (Barre, Mass.) into the right side of the cage.

Junior midfielder Grace Adams (Leominster, Mass.) potted a pair of goal just 105 seconds apart in the fourth quarter to give the Lancers a 3-1 lead. Jones assisted on both markers. Adams now has nine goals on the 2022 campaign while Jones increased her team-leading assist total to eight.

Worcester finished with a 28-3 shot advantage for the game as well as a 16-3 edge in penalty corner attempts. Sixteen of the Lancers' 28 shots came in the second half. The Worcester defense limited the Bears to just one shot over the final 30 minutes.

Sophomore goalkeeper Madison Ferrara (Somerset, Mass.) turned aside two shots to record her 12th win of the season for the Lancers. BSU freshman netminder Madelyne Guidaboni (Hanson, Mass.) was busy between the pipes as she made nine saves in the setback.

Both teams wrap up regular season play later this week. The Bears host Little East foe Castleton University on Saturday afternoon at four o'clock, while the Lancers travel to UMass Dartmouth on Friday night for a seven o'clock conference game with the Corsairs.
