McElroy, Guidaboni Lead Field Hockey to 1-0 Win Over UMass Dartmouth

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Junior midfielder Charlotte McElroy (Carver, Mass.) scored the game's only goal in the third quarter to lead the visiting Bridgewater State University field hockey team to a 1-0 shutout victory over UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday night in a Little East Conference (LEC) affair from Cressy Field.

The Bears improve to 2-12 on the season and 1-8 in the Little East, while the Corsairs fall to 2-12 overall and 0-9 in conference play.

Stationed near the right post after starting a penalty corner midway through the third quarter, McElroy tipped home a shot by junior forward Zoe Bergeron (Blackstone, Mass.) to break the scoreless tie. The goal marked McElroy's first of the season while Bergeron recorded her first assist of the 2022 campaign.

BSU freshman goalkeeper Madelyne Guidaboni (Hanson, Mass.) turned aside six shots to record her second win and second shutout of the season. Guidaboni made five of her six saves after McElroy had given the Bears the lead.

Bridgewater nearly made it a two-goal game 1:32 into the fourth quarter, but UMD freshman defender Kyra Ferreira (Westport, Mass.) made a key defensive save on a shot by freshman forward Brianna Gagnon (Tewksbury, Mass.) to keep the Corsairs within one.

UMass held a 14-6 shot advantage for the game as well as a 9-5 edge in penalty corners. Eleven of the Corsairs' 14 shots came within the final 21 minutes of the contest. Three of those 11 shots were blocked, five were stopped by Guidaboni and three were off frame.

Sophomore netminder Hannah Trombly (Foxborough, Mass.) made a pair of saves in the setback for the hosts.

The Little East schedule continues for both teams on Saturday afternoon at three o'clock. The Bears travel to Plymouth State University to take on the Panthers, while the Corsairs entertain the Falcons of Fitchburg State University.
