Field Hockey falls to WestConn, 2-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The visiting Western Connecticut State University field hockey team posted a 2-0 shutout victory over Bridgewater State University on Saturday afternoon in a Little East Conference (LEC) affair from Swenson Field.

The Wolves improve to 4-8 overall and 1-6 in the Little East with their first conference win of the season, while the Bears fall to 1-12 on the year and 0-8 in LEC play. WestConn has won each of the last four meetings of the two teams and is 7-12 all-time versus the Bears since 2005.

After a scoreless first half, sophomore forward Regiane Silva (Danbury, Conn.) got the Wolves on the board just 59 seconds into the third quarter with her second goal of the 2022 campaign. Senior forward Sophie Leeds (Trumbull, Conn.) stickhandled into the circle and found an open Silva in front of the net, who pushed an elevated goal into the back of the cage.

Junior midfielder Sydney Chenoweth (Baldwinville, Mass.) added another marker to the scoreboard for Western Connecticut at 13:49 in the fourth quarter. The Wolves capitalized on a penalty corner with Chenoweth collecting a rebound and burying a goal into the far lefthand corner.

The Wolves led the offensive attack on the day, topping the Bears in shots, 10-4, and penalty corners, 10-0.

Western Connecticut senior goalkeeper Kayla Hnasko (Raritan N.J.) tallied one save on the day as she recorded her second win and first shutout of the season.

Freshman netminder Madelyne Guidaboni (Hanson, Mass.) turned aside three shots throughout her 60 minutes in the cage for the Bears.

The Little East schedule continues for both teams next week. The Bears travel to UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday evening for a seven o'clock game with the Corsairs, while the Wolves entertain Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday afternoon at four.
