Field Hockey Falls to Eastern Connecticut in Little East Action, 2-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to defending Little East Conference (LEC) champion Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday night at Swenson Field.

The Warriors improve to 5-7 on the season and 2-5 in the Little East, while the Bears fall to 1-11 overall and 0-7 in conference play. Eastern has won each of the last four meetings of the two teams.

Scoreless through the first half, Lexi James (Ipswich, Mass.) led the offensive attack for the Bears with three shots, two on goal. Brianna Gagnon (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Zoe Bergeron (Blackstone, Mass.) both added a shot on goal in the half. Bridgewater generated three penalty corners through the first two quarters.

Aly Kendrick (North Branford, Conn.), Grace Mangiameli (Suffield, Conn.), and Brooke Mercier (Washington, Conn.) paced the Warriors offense in the half with one shot on goal each. Eastern had the edge in penalty corners through the first two quarters with four.

Freshman midfielder Emma Sanson (Thomaston, Conn.) opened the scoring with her sixth goal of the season for the Warriors. With less than five minutes left to play in the third quarter Sanson dribbled to the top of the key and sent a shot firing directly to the back of the cage past Bears' goalkeeper Madelyne Guidaboni (Hanson, Mass.).

Eastern Connecticut doubled their lead at 10:47 in the fourth quarter on a penalty corner. Freshman forward Angelina Falleni (Byram, N.J.) collected a rebound off the pads and buried a backhanded flip between the pipes for her third goal of the 2022 campaign.

Eastern finished with a 16-8 shot advantage for the game as well as a 6-4 edge in penalty corners.

Freshman goalkeeper Madelyne Guidaboni (Hanson, Mass.) made ten saves in the setback for the Bears.

Two Warrior goaltenders combined on the shutout. Senior Sarah Gallagher (South Windsor, Conn.) got the start and turned aside four shots in 30 minutes of action. Classmate Erin Fainer (Thomaston, Conn.) played the second half and made one save to record her second win of the season.

The Little East schedule continues for both teams on Saturday. The Bears host the Wolves of Western Connecticut State University at four o'clock, while the Warriors travel to Westfield State University to take on the Owls at 11:00 AM.
