Cullinane's Game-Winner Lifts Field Hockey to 2-1 Win over Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. -- Senior forward Brittany Cullinane (Lunenburg, Mass.) potted the game-winning goal in the 51st minute to lift the visiting Bridgewater State University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Wheaton College on Tuesday night at Nordin Field.

The Bears improve to 10-6 with the win, while the Lyons slip to 7-9.

With the score tied at 1-1, Cullinane collected a deflected pass and buried her team-leading 20th goal of the season.

Cullinane is just the fourth 20-goal scorer in program history and first since Shelby Farland potted a school record 32 goals in 2012.

Bridgewater took a 1-0 lead into the intermission as sophomore forward Kathryn Jacobson (Norfolk, Mass.) connected for her first collegiate goal in the 20th minute of play. Junior midfielder Christine Curran (Ayer, Mass.) set up the goal with a cross from the right side to a wide open Jacobson.

Senior forward Amelia Gage (Lebanon, N.H.) buried a shot inside the left post in the 49th minute to knot the score at 1-1. Senior forward Ellen Gulezian (Merrimac, Mass.) set up the goal with a feed from the left baseline.

Just 97 seconds later, Cullinane provided the heroics with the game-winning strike.

The Bears held an 18-7 shot advantage including a decisive 11-1 edge over the first 35 minutes.

Wheaton had a couple of chances to score one late, but were unable to get the ball past Bridgewater State sophomore goalkeeper Allison Chappell (Raynham, Mass.). Chappell finished the game with two saves.

Junior netminder Riley Thompson (Fairfield, Conn.) turned aside nine shots in the setback for the Lyons.

The Bears travel to Worcester State University on Saturday to take on the Lancers in the opening round of the 2016 Little East Conference Tournament. Game time is slated for 5:00 PM.

Notes: BSU Hall of Famer Karen Croteau (29 goals in 1982) and Bethany Bush (22 goals in 2010) round out the Bears' 20-goal scorers....Cullinane has recorded the game-winning goal in eight of the Bears' ten wins this season.
