Field Hockey Falls to Salem State, 2-1

SALEM, Mass. -- Senior goalkeeper Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, Mass.) made 29 saves as the Salem State University field hockey team stunned visiting Bridgewater State University, 2-1, in Little East Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The win gave Salem State its first conference victory of the season as the Vikings improve to 2-12 overall and 1-10 in the Little East.

Bridgewater fell to 9-6 on the year and 6-5 in conference play with the costly setback. The Bears slipped to the #7 seed in next week's Little East Tournament and will travel to #2 Worcester State University next Saturday for a first round game with the Lancers.

Woodin made 19 saves in the first half as her Vikings were outshot 22-4 in the period, but somehow led 1-0 on the scoreboard.

Freshmen midfielder Kaitlynn Palmer (Verona, N.Y.) scored the lone goal of the opening stanza in the seventh minute as she tapped in a one-timer that came across the crease from senior forward Natalie Bourne (Tewksbury, Mass.).

Freshmen forward Krista Forbes (Guildland, N.Y.) extended the Salem State advantage to 2-0 less than three minutes into the second half off an assist from senior midfielder Jennifer Jordan (Saugus, Mass.).

BSU junior forward Tori O'Dea (South Dennis, Mass.) cut the deifict in half in the 63rd minute with sophomore forward Julianne Kilduff (Bellingham, Mass.) picking up the assist.

Sophomore netminder Allison Chappell (Raynham, Mass.) made three saves between the pipes for the Bears.

Bridgewater finished with a 39-8 shot advantage as well as a 13-2 edge in penalty corner attempts.
