Field Hockey Falls to WPI, 2-0

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Jena Mazzucco's (Danbury, CT) goal in the 22nd minute proved to be the difference as WPI defeated visiting Bridgewater State 2-0 on Tuesday night in a non-conference field hockey matchup at Alumni Stadium.

The Engineers improved to 2-0 for the first time since the 2011 season, which was also the last time WPI topped  the Bears (1-1).

Mazzucco broke the ice when she snuck a feed from Allie Buckley (Worcester, MA) past the goalkeeper on the right side. Buckley raced into the circle uncontested to setup the tally.

Following the goal, Bridgewater State had a pair of chances via penalty corners, but was unable to convert.  Earlier in the frame, the Engineers had a pair of corners of their own, including a bid that sailed over the cage.

The half ended when Nicole Holmes (Plymouth, MA) knocked home a rebound following a penalty corner with time expired.

Jennifer Arnold's (W. Yarmouth, MA) close range shot was blocked amid a flurry of action before WPI called its timeout. Brittany Cullinane (Lunenburg, MA) was the other Bear credited with a shot.

Lauren Puishys (Oxford, MA) was called upon to make one save in the victory while BSU's Kaylyn Allahyarian (Norwell, MA), the reigning Little East Goalkeeper of the Week, stopped seven of the nine shots she faced.

As a team, WPI outshot Bridgewater State 9-2 overall and 7-1 on net. The Engineers also took five of the nine penalty corners.

WPI travels to Simmons on Saturday for an 11am contest while Bridgewater State hosts Wellesley on Sunday at 1pm.
