Field Hockey Blanks Eastern Connecticut, 2-0, in Regular Season Finale

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University field hockey team scored twice in the second half as the visiting Bears posted a 2-0 shutout of Eastern Connecticut State University in Little East Conference (LEC) action on Saturday afternoon.

The game marked the regular season finale for both teams.  Bridgewater improves to 16-2 on the season and 10-1 in the LEC as the Bears equaled the single-season program mark of 16 wins set in 2007.  Bridgewater is the second seed in next week's Little East Tournament and will host seventh seeded Southern Maine on Tuesday night (7:00) in quarterfinal round action.  Eastern Connecticut ends the season with an overall record of 6-12 (2-9 LEC).

BSU junior netminder Kacie Sturgeon (Dartmouth, Mass.) turned aside four shots, all in the first half, to record her fourth shutout of the season.

After a scoreless opening 35 minutes, Bridgewater State junior forward Carissa Vizakis (Bellingham, Mass.) broke the deadlock as she notched her 11th goal of the season.  Stationed in front of the next, Vizakis redirected a feed from freshman midfielder Jennifer Arnold (West Yarmouth, Mass.) to give the Bears a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute.

Bridgewater would add an insurance marker with 48 seconds left to play as freshman midfielder Emily Mosca (Dedham, Mass.) tallied her second goal of the season.  Mosca scored off a penalty corner as she blasted a shot past the Eastern goaltender.  Senior midfielder Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, Mass.) assisted on the marker as she extended her point scoring streak to 22 games dating back to last season.

The Bears held a 13-10 shot advantage for the game including a 9-4 edge in the second half.  Penalty corners were 11-6 in favor of Bridgewater.

Sophomore Olivia Mullen (Bethel, Conn.) made six saves between the pipes for the host Warriors.

Notes: With her assist, Farland tied the Bears' all-time mark of 25 helpers which is also held by Bethany Bush (2007-10).
