Farland Sets BSU Field Hockey Scoring Mark in Loss to UMass Dartmouth

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team came from behind to defeat visiting Bridgewater State, 3-2, in a Little East Conference match at Cressy Field Saturday.

The Bears came out firing scoring two goals in the first 15 minutes. Junior forward Demi Miskiv (Centerville, MA) opened the scoring in the ninth minute when she found the back of the net for the 14th time this season off a pass from freshman midfielder Jennifer Arnold (West Yarmouth, MA). Six minutes later senior midfielder Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, MA) added to the Bears' lead when she scored her 25th goal of the season.

Farland set the school scoring record with her goal as she now has 61 points on the season.  Farland surpassed BSU Hall of Famer Karen Croteau's previous mark of 60 points set back in 1982.

The Corsairs rallied in the 24th minute when they scored two goals 90 seconds apart. Junior forward Tiffany Richard (Fitchburg, MA) got UMD on the board when she converted a pass from senior forward Erica Allan (Amherst, MA). The Corsairs tied the game at two when senior defender Taryn Cardiel (Moorpark, CA) scored her seventh goal of the season.

The two teams would go into the half tied at two and the score would stay that way until the final minute of the game. Junior defender Victoria Dolce (Jamestown, RI) found the back of the net off a penalty corner as time expired to lead the Corsairs to victory. Senior midfielder Jenna Miedzionoski (Beverly, MA) assisted on the play.

The Corsairs outshot the Bears, 33-7.  Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren O'Brien (Rochester, MA) made two saves for UMass Dartmouth, while junior Kacie Sturgeon (Dartmouth, MA) made 22 saves for Trinity.

UMD improved to 10-5 and 8-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while BSU dropped to 13-2 and 7-1 in LEC action with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Fitchburg State Wednesday evening. Bridgewater State will host Salem State Wednesday.
