Farland, Miskiv Lead Field Hockey to 6-1 Win at Worcester State

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Senior Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, Mass.) tied her season high with four goals and junior Demi Miskiv (Centerville, Mass.) added two more to help pace Bridgewater State to a 6-1 triumph over Worcester State in Little East field hockey action this afternoon at Coughlin Field.

Miskiv wasted no time in putting the Bears (9-1, 5-0 LEC) on top when she sent in her 11th marker of the year off a pass from the left side from Farland, 1:02 into the contest.

The Lancers (2-7, 0-5 LEC) then buckled down on defense and nearly held the visitors scoreless before the period ended, but Farland would send in her 14th goal of the campaign when she went the distance from the 40 yard-line and chipped it in from five yards out.

Bridgewater State added to its lead with a pair of goals five minutes apart to start off the second half. Farland scored on a cross from the right side of the cage by senior Beth Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) and Miskiv netted her second goal of the game on a loose ball in front of the net at the 48:52 mark.

Farland turned in her second hat-trick of the season on an unassisted marker with 51:49 off the clock and then she tacked on her fourth goal of the game less than seven minutes later off a long pass by Phillips for the 6-0 advantage.

The Lancers broke the shutout with 2:18 left in the contest when freshman Julie O'Rourke (Worcester, Mass.) potted her second goal of the season as senior Nicole Harvey (Attleboro, Mass.) contributed an assist on the play.

The Bears finished with the 22-12 edge in shots and they had a 7-5 lead in penalty corners.

Farland set a new career high in scoring as she now has 43 points on the season.  She also equaled last year's total of 17 goals and increased her career scoring output to 111 points.  She trails Bethany Bush (119 pts) for second place on the Bears' all-time list.

Farland has now recorded at least one point in each of the last 14 games dating back to last season.  Her 14-game scoring streak started back on October 29th of 2011 in a 3-0 win over Eastern Connecticut State.

Miskiv's 12 goals are also a career high.  After being held without a point over the first three games of the season, Miskiv has recorded 12 goals, including a pair of hat tricks, to go along with an assist over the last seven games.

BSU junior Kacie Sturgeon (Dartmouth, Mass.) stopped all six shots she saw in the net before being lifted for senior Cassie Johansen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) who played the final 18:11.

Worcester State senior Rebecca Mullen (Peabody, Mass.) turned aside seven shots in the setback.

Both squads return to LEC action on Tuesday. The Blue and Gold host Western Connecticut at 7 PM while the Bears travel up I-495 to play Framingham State at 4 o'clock.

Notes: The Bears have scored 46 goals through the first ten games of the season as they are on pace to eclipse the team single-season goal scoring mark of 60 goals set in 1979....The only other time that a Bridgewater State field hockey team had one loss or less through the first team games of the season was in 1985 when the squad started the year 9-0-1.
