Field Hockeys Downs Wheaton, 7-1

REHOBOTH, Mass. -- In a rematch of last year's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament first-round game, the Bridgewater State University field hockey team routed host Wheaton College, 7-1, on Sunday afternoon at Faxon Field.

The Lyons slipped to 2-6 on the season, while the Bears, who have now scored at least six goals in four games, saw their record improve to 7-1.  Bridgewater has won three straight games against their Southeastern Massachusetts rival.

Wheaton sophomore Sarah McNicholas (Boxboro, Mass.) recorded her third goal in two games after giving her team a 1-0 lead 3:41 into play, but that proved to be the Lyons' lone score, as Bridgewater State exploded for seven unanswered goals.

Seniors Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, Mass.) and Beth Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) scored two times apiece, while junior Carissa Vizakis (Bellingham, Mass.) finished with one marker and an assist.

Vizakis' eighth-minute goal knotted things up before Phillips' unassisted tally at 18:59 gave the guests the lead for good.  Leading 2-1 at the half, Bridgewater State received two goals from Farland, including one on a penalty stroke, 10:49 apart in the second frame to put the game out of reach.

With her two goals, Farland increased her career scoring output to 99 points.  She leads the Bears this season with 12 goals and seven assists for 31 points.

Lyon sophomore goalie Madison Wolters (Marstons Mills, Mass.) turned in double-digit saves for the third consecutive game, this time turning aside 15 Bear shots.  For the visitors, junior Kacie Sturgeon (Dartmouth, Mass.) collected her first win in her first start of the season with one stop.

Bridgewater State held a 28-4 advantage in shots and took 21 of the game's 27 penalty corners, which included a 13-1 second-half edge.
