Field Hockey Blanks WPI, 2-0, for Second Straight Shutout

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State tallied a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 road win over WPI in a non-conference field hockey contest at Alumni Field on Tuesday.  The win puts the Bears at 2-0, while WPI falls to 1-1 on the young season.

Junior forward Carissa Vizakis (Bellingham, Mass.) put her team on the board when she knocked home a feed by senior forward Beth Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) into the back corner of the net for her first goal of the season at 18:46.

Bridgewater State, who enjoyed a 11-3 shot advantage in the first stanza, added to its advantage early in the second when senior co-captain Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, Mass.) buried a shot for her 3rd goal of the season and 31st of her career at 37:09.

The Engineers then tallied five of the game's last eight shots but were unable to dent the scoreboard.  Farland led all players with six shots while Amy Misera (Hunt Valley, Md.) paced the Crimson and Gray with three. For the game, BSU held a slight 8-7 edge in penalty corners.

BSU senior netminder Cassie Johansen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) notched her second shutout in as many games for the Bears turning away all four Engineer shots on net. WPI goalkeeper Liz Dufresne (Worcester, Mass.) made seven saves including back-to-back stops off a wild scramble that also featured a defensive save by Chelsea Cook (West Sayville, N.Y.) midway through the first half.

WPI is off until Saturday when it travels to Union for a 1pm matchup. Bridgewater State returns home on Friday for its Little East Conference opener against Keene State at 7pm.
