Farland Leads Field Hockey to 3-0 Shutout of Thomas

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior forward Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, Mass.) notched a pair of goals to lead the Bridgewater State University field hockey team to a season-opening 3-0 shutout win over visiting Thomas College on Sunday afternoon at Swenson Field.

Farland, who last season set career highs with 17 goals and six assists, picked up right where she left off a year ago as She opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a blast from just inside the top of the circle that beat the Thomas netminder blocker side.  Farland made it a 2-0 game in the 43rd minute on a penalty stroke goal.

Junior midfielder Georgina Bagordo (Sparta, N.J.) rounded out the scoring in the 63rd minute with an unassisted tally as she found the back of the net on a shot from the left side.

Senior goaltender Cassie Johansen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) recorded her third career shutout between the pipes for Bridgewater.  Johansen did not face a shot as the Bears limited the Terriers to just two off-target attempts.

The Bears held a 21-2 shot advantage as well as a 15-2 edge in penalty corners.

Junior netminders Jasmine Bishop (Waterville, Maine) and Sofia Sourgiadakis (Littleton, N.H.) combined to make ten saves in goal for Thomas.

In upcoming action, Bridgewater travels to WPI on Tuesday night to take on the Engineers at seven.  Thomas hosts Bates College on Wednesday, September 12th also at seven.
