BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – In Little East
Conference field hockey action, the Bridgewater State College Bears
dropped a 2-0 decision to visiting Eastern Connecticut State
University this afternoon in Bridgewater. With the loss, the Bears
fall to 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in the Little East as they
snapped a three-game winning streak. Eastern improves to 2-3
overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Sophomore netminder Mindy Maher (Sherman, CT)
turned aside 6 shots to pick up her first shutout and first win of
the season. Eastern tallied both of their goals in the first half
off penalty corners. Junior forward Joslin Wells
(Marstons Mills, MA) opened the scoring in the 15th minute, while
sophomore midfielder Kelsey Kaiser (Quaker Hill,
CT) made it a 2-0 advantage with just 46 seconds left in the half.
After being outshot in the first half, 7-3, the Bears held a 9-1 advantage in the second half but could not get a shot past Maher. Senior goaltender Nicole Downs (Hanover, MA) made 4 saves in goal for the Bears in the loss.
Bridgewater State will look to rebound next Tuesday as the Bears
host non-conference rival Wheaton College at 4 PM. Eastern travels
to Connecticut College on Tuesday for a 4:30 non-conference match
with the Camels.
