BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University junior defensive tackle Nicolas Canales has been selected to the D3football.com Team of the Week.
Canales is the fourth Bear to earn the honor this season joining senior punter Shane Drake (Franklin, Mass.), graduate linebacker Ben McMahaon (Somerset, Mass.) and junior kick returner Isaiah Wright (Worcester, Mass.).
Canales notched 11 tackles (seven solo) including 2 1/2 sacks to go along with a forced fumble in the Bears' 38-14 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) win over Fitchburg State University. His first sack of the day led to a fumble and a 63-yard return for a touchdown by teammate Brendan Albert (Sr., Canton, Mass.).
Through five games this season, Canales checks in with 23 tackles (14 solo), 5 1/2 tackles for loss, 4 1/2 sacks and a forced fumble. He presently leads the MASCAC in sacks and ranks sixth in tackles for loss.
In 23 games over three seasons with the Bears, Canales has amassed 49 tackles (31 solo), 11 tackles for loss, five sacks and a forced fumble.
The BSU football team is currently 3-2 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in the MASCAC. The conference schedule continues on Friday night when the Bears travel to Worcester State Universuty for a seven o'clock game with the Lancers.
