Alex Monteiro Named to Capital One Academic All-District One Gridiron Team

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University senior linebacker Alex Monteiro has been named to the 2012 Capital One Division III Football Academic All-District One Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  Monteiro will now move on to the national ballot for selection to the Capital One Academic All-America squad that will be announced later this month.

Monteiro is the program’s first CoSIDA Academic All-District One selection since former gridiron standout Justin Lima earned back-to-back honors in 2007 and 2008.

The Capital One Academic All-America program selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA’s Academic All-America program since 2011.

A 2011 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Fall All-Academic Team selection, Monteiro currently sports an impressive 3.50 grade point average while majoring in Management.

In ten games during the 2012 regular season, Monteiro notched 53 tackles (36 solo) including 1 ½ for loss.  The Portsmouth, Rhode Island native recorded his first career interception in the Bears’ 44-21 victory at Coast Guard back on October 6th. 

Monteiro has started each of the last 20 games over the past two years as he has accumulated 116 tackles (81 solo), 6 ½ tackles for loss and five pass breakups in that span. As a junior in 2011, he was named to the New England Football Conference (NEFC) All-Bogan Division Second Team.

Monteiro helped the BSU football team post a 9-1 regular season mark during the 2012 campaign capped off by a 31-21 Cranberry Bowl victory over Mass. Maritime Academy last weekend.  The Bears finished 6-1 in the Bogan Division in their final season in the NEFC, and will now await word of possible post-season berths in the either the NCAA or ECAC Championships. Those pairings will be announced on Sunday, November 11th (NCAA) and Monday, November 12th (ECAC).
