Mike McCarthy Named NEFC Offensive Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University junior quarterback Mike McCarthy has been selected as the New England Football Conference (NEFC) Offensive Player of the Week.

McCarthy ran and passed his way to the Lee Harrington Trophy as the MVP of the 34th Annual Ocean Spray Cranberry Bowl this past weekend.  The Edgartown, Massachusetts native rushed for 184 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries and completed 7 of 14 passes for 74 yards and another score. He totaled 258 yards of total offense and found the end zone on TD runs of five and 22 yards while hooking up with classmate Matt Green (Stoughton, Mass.) on a 16-yard scoring strike as the Bears downed Mass. Maritime, 31-21, in the Bears’ final NEFC game.

In ten games this season, McCarthy has rushed for 788 yards and 13 touchdowns while throwing for 805 yards and seven touchdowns.  He ranks fourth in the NEFC in touchdowns, fifth in scoring (78 pts.) and ninth in rushing (78.8 ypg).

In 30 games over his first three season with the Bears, McCarthy has amassed 1,906 yards on the ground and 2,632 yards through the air.  He has rushed for 24 touchdowns, passed for 23 and has a 102.58 QB efficiency rating.  McCarthy ranks fifth all-time at BSU in passing touchdowns, sixth in passing yards, seventh in rushing touchdowns, tenth in rushing yards and 14th in scoring (144 points).

With the Cranberry Bowl victory over Mass. Maritime, the BSU football team wrapped up regular season play with an overall record of 9-1.  The Bears reached the nine-win mark for the fifth time in program history and first since the 2005 season.  Bridgewater will now await word on a possible bid to either the NCAA Division III Tournament or an ECAC Bowl Game.
