Mike McCarthy Named NEFC Offensive Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University freshman quarterback Mike McCarthy has been selected as the New England Football Conference (NEFC) Offensive Player of the Week.

McCarthy, who hails from Edgartown, Massachusetts, put together an outstanding performance in the Bears' 32-25 double overtime win over Coast Guard on Saturday.  He completed 17 of 28 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns and added 97 yards on the ground and another score to lead Bridgewater to the NEFC Bogan Division victory.

McCarthy connected on scoring passes of 17, 37 and 14 yards including the game-winning score in the second overtime period. He also rushed for a four-yard touchdown and connected with receiver Dave Leombruno (Lakeville, Mass.) on the ensuing two-point conversion to give BSU a 25-22 lead with 1:51 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Through six games this season, McCarthy has passed for 419 yards and four touchdowns and leads the team in rushing with 387 yards on the ground.  He currently ranks tenth in the NEFC in total offense with 134.3 yards per game.

The Bridgewater State football team is 3-3 on the season and 1-2 in Bogan Division play.  The Bears will host Worcester State University in their Homecoming Game on Saturday at 1:15 PM.
