Bruce Burley Named Gold Helmet Award Winner

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Massachusetts quarterback Liam Coen (Newport, R.I.) and Bridgewater State running back Bruce Burley (Mansfield, Mass.) received the Boston Globe Gold Helmet Awards Wednesday at the New England Football Writers luncheon at Harvard's Dillon Fieldhouse.

Burley had a record-setting day for the Bears, rushing for a school-record 292 yards on just 18 carries along with four touchdowns, breaking the previous school-best mark of 283 yards set in 1998 by Seto Berry against Maine Maritime, as BSC cruised to a 47-14 win over Worcester State. Burley scored on runs of 5, 56, 82 and 15 yards despite not playing in the fourth quarter.

With the outburst Burley increased his season total to 1,275 yards on the ground with one game remaining, good for the fifth-most in season annals, and moved into third on BSC's all-time rushing chart with 2,623 yards as well as into seventh with 212 career points. The win propelled BSC to 6-3 overall and into a tie for first with Maine Maritime in the New England Football Conference's Bogan Division with a 5-1 record. The senior was also honored as the NEFC Offensive Player of the Week, the second time this year he has won the award.

Coen, a recipient of the award Sept. 10, reclaimed the honor by going 15-for-17 for 241 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-0 shutout of Rhode Island. Coen's completion rate of 88.2 percent was the second-highest total in UMass history behind an 89.4 percent clip by Tim Daly at Delaware State Sept. 4, 2004. It also marked Coen's 12th-career three-touchdown game. UMass improved its record to 6-3 overall, 3-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association and is currently tied for second with Maine in the North Division.

Coen, a senior playing in front of family and friends in the last collegiate game in his home state, added TD passes of two and four yards in the second quarter as the Minutemen built a 35-0 halftime lead. Coen then added a 35-yard TD pass in the opening possession of the third quarter before being pulled.

UMass returns to the gridiron Saturday at home against Maine at noon in the Minutemen's second of four-straight conference games to close out the season. Bridgewater State finishes out the year at home in the Cranberry Bowl against Massachusetts Maritime Saturday at noon.
