Matthew Seavey Named MASCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University junior righthander Matthew Seavey has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Baseball Pitcher of the Week.

Seavey tossed a complete game, one-hit shutout in a 5-0 victory over Westfield State this past weekend. The North Attleboro, Massachusetts product walked three and struck out seven as the Bears secured the MASCAC regular season title and the top seed in the upcoming MASCAC Tournament. Seavey retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced in the win and set down the side in order in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings.

In nine appearances (all starts) on the mound in his first season with the Bears, Seavey is 6-2 with 52 strikeouts and a 1.62 earned run average over 55 2/3 innings of work. Opponents are also batting just .161 against him.

Seavey currently ranks third in the MASCAC in ERA, fifth in innings pitched and seventh in strikeouts. He is also tied for third among the conference leaders in wins and tied for sixth in games started.

On a national level, Seavey ranks 17th in all of Division III in ERA. 

The BSU baseball team wrapped up the regular season with an overall record of 27-13 including a 17-4 mark in the MASCAC. The Bears captured their first MASCAC regular season crown since 2012 and will host the MASCAC Tournament which gets underway later this week. Bridgewater will take on either fourth-seeded Worcester State or #5 seed Salem State on Thursday afternoon at three o'clock.
