Wladkowski, Emerson Headline Bears' All-MASCAC Baseball Selections

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University sophomore right fielder Jay Wladkowski has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Player of the Year and freshman second baseman Scott Emerson garnered MASCAC Rookie of the Year honors to headline the Bears’ six representatives on the 2022 All-MASCAC Baseball Team.

Wladkowski and Emerson both earned All-MASCAC First Team accolades. Joining the duo on the All-MASCAC Team from Bridgewater State are graduate starting pitcher Matt Josselyn, junior starting pitcher Matthew Seavey, junior closer Tyler Dasilva-Medeiros and sophomore left fielder Joe Frechette. Josselyn, Seavey, Dasilva-Medeiros and Frechette are all second team selections.

All six BSU student-athletes are making their first appearance on the All-MASCAC Team.

Wladkowski and Emerson helped lead the Bears to their first MASCAC regular season and tournament championships since 2012. Bridgewater will compete in the NCAA Division III Tournament for the 15th time in program history later this week with regional play getting underway on Friday, May 20th at SUNY Cortland. The Bears are seeded fourth in the four-team Cortland Regional and will take on the host Red Dragons on Friday morning at ten.

Emerson is the Bears' first MASCAC Rookie of the Year since 2005 when Steve Smith (2005) capped off a run of four straight Bears (Scott Favreau, Jordan Richards, Eric Johnson, Smith) to earn the honor. Bridgewater State's last MASCAC Player of the Year prior to Wladkowski was Ryan Feeney in 2017.

Heading into the NCAAs, Wladkowski is batting .379 (61-161) with a home run, 16 doubles, 21 stolen bases, 44 runs scored, and 43 runs batted in over 43 games.  The Norwood, Massachusetts product currently leads the MASCAC in hits, runs batted in and at bats, and is tied for the conference lead in doubles and games played. He also ranks third in stolen bases, fourth in batting, fifth in extra base hits, and sixth in walks, total bases (80) and on base percentage (.448).

Emerson is currently batting .371 (59-159) with eight doubles, a triple, 18 walks, 31 stolen bases, 43 runs scored and 32 RBI over 43 games. The Peabody, Massachusetts native leads the MASCAC and is tied for 11th in all of Division III in stolen bases. He is also tied for the conference lead in games played and ranks second in both hits and at bats, fifth in batting, seventh in total bases (69), runs batted in and sacrifice flies (3), and tenth in walks and on base percentage (.437).

A native of Plymouth, Massachusetts, Frechette checks in with a .328 (44-134) batting average to go along with eight doubles, a triple, 15 walks, 11 stolen bases, 26 runs and 27 RBI. He is tied for fourth in the MASCAC with four sacrifice flies and ranks tenth in the conference in both stolen bases and hits.

The MASCAC Tournament MVP, Josselyn is 7-2 with five complete games and four shutouts in 11 appearances on the mound including ten starts. The Hanson, Massachusetts product has produced a 1.82 earned run average and fanned 65 batters over 64 1/3 innings of work, while opponents are batting just .187 against him. Josselyn, who sports an impressive 0.79 WHIP (walks & hits per innings pitched), fashioned together a BSU record 40 1/3 scoreless inning streak during the season.

Seavey, who hails from North Attleboro, Massachusetts, is 7-2 on the season in ten starts with one shutout, 57 strikeouts and a 1.58 ERA over 62 2/3 innings. Opponents are batting just .167 again him and he checks in with a 0.93 WHIP.

Josselyn leads the MASCAC in strikeouts, shutouts, WHIP, strikeouts to walk ratio (7.22) and walks per nine innings pitched (1.26). He is also tied for the conference lead in complete games, tied for second in wins and ranks fourth in both innings pitched and ERA.

On a national level, Josselyn ranks sixth in all of Division III in WHIP, 13th in complete games, 25th in ERA, 26th in strikeout to walk ratio and 33rd in walks per nine innings.

Seavey is second among the MASCAC leaders in ERA and WHIP, and tied for second in wins. He also ranks fifth in the conference in innings pitched and sixth in strikeouts. Seavey is currently 11th in all of Division III in ERA and 21st in WHIP.

Dasilva-Medeiros has appeared in 14 games this season with seven saves and one relief win to go along with 15 strikeouts and a 3.18 ERA over 17 innings of work. The Taunton, Massachusetts native is tied for the MASCAC lead and ranks 19th in all of Division III in saves. Dasilva-Medeiros is also tied for eighth in the conference with his 14 appearances.
