Three Bears Named to ABCA Division III All-Region Team

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University graduate pitcher Matt Josselyn, sophomore right fielder Jay Wladkowski and freshman second baseman Scott Emerson have been selected to the 2022 ABCA/Rawlings Division III All-Region Two Team.

Josselyn was named as a first team selection on the ABCA Division III All-Region Two Team, while Wladkowski and Emerson were each named as third team honorees. Josselyn, Wladkowski and Emerson are the Bears' first all-region selections since second baseman Sean Riley in 2013.

Region two features New England schools from the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), Little East Conference (LEC), Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) and the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) as well as Brandeis University.

Josselyn went 7-2 in 2022 with five complete games and four shutouts in 12 appearances on the mound including 11 starts. The Hanson, Massachusetts product produced a 1.77 earned run average and fanned 69 batters over 71 1/3 innings of work, while opponents batted just .193 against him. Josselyn, who also sported an impressive 0.81 WHIP (walks & hits per innings pitched), fashioned together a BSU record 40 1/3 scoreless inning streak during the season.

Josselyn led the MASCAC in strikeouts, shutouts, WHIP, strikeout to walk ratio (6.90) and walks per nine innings pitched (1.26). He is also tied for the conference lead in games started, tied for second in wins and innings pitched, ranked second in hits allowed per nine innings (6.06) and third in ERA.

On a national level, Josselyn finished the season sixth in all of Division III in WHIP, 13th in complete games, 18th in ERA, 26th in strikeout to walk ratio, and 31st in both walks per nine innings and hits per nine innings.

Wladkowski batted .391 (66-169) with a home run, 16 doubles, 21 stolen bases, 21 walks, 46 runs scored, and 46 RBI over 45 games. The Norwood, Massachusetts product led the MASCAC in hits, runs batted in, at bats, doubles and games played. He also ranked second in runs, third in batting average and stolen bases, fourth in total bases (87), fifth in on base percentage (.458), sixth in walks and tenth in slugging percentage (.515).

Emerson batted .353 (59-167) in 45 games during his rookie campaign with eight doubles, a triple, 19 walks, 31 stolen bases, 45 runs scored and 32 RBI. The Peabody, Massachusetts native led the MASCAC in stolen bases and equaled Wladkowski for the conference lead in games played. Emerson also ranked second among the MASCAC leaders in hits and at bats, third in runs, seventh in total bases (69), and tied for seventh in runs batted in, walks and sacrifice flies (3).

Wladkowski finished 26th in all of Division III in doubles, while Emerson tied for 12th in stolen bases.

Wladkowski and Emerson both tied the program record for games played in a season, while Wladkowski equaled the BSU single-season mark for at bats.

Wladkowski's 18 doubles ranks second in BSU single-season history behind only Riley's 25 in 2012, His 66 hits is good for fourth all-time.

Emerson recorded 50 singles on the season which trails the Bears' single-season mark of 52 set by BSU Hall of Famer Ed Grueter in 1991. Emerson's 31 stolen bases are the most in a season since Brad Koneski stole 32 bases in 2009 and the fourth highest in program history.

Josselyn, Wladkowski and Emerson helped the Bears capture their first MASCAC regular season and tournament championships since 2012, and reach the 30-win plateau (30-15) for the fifth time in program history. Bridgewater qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament for the 15th time in program history as the Bears competed at a four-team regional hosted by SUNY Cortland.

The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 13,000 members represent all 50 states and 25 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, High School and Youth.
