Baseball Falls to Western New England, 14-4

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Visiting Western New England University posted a 14-4 victory over Bridgewater State University in non-conference baseball action on Friday afternoon at Alumni Park.

The Golden Bears even their record at 15-15 on the season with the win, while the host Bears fall to 7-19.

Western New England banged out 20 hits in the game and scored all 14 of its runs within the first six innings. The Golden Bears had at least one hit and left at least one runner on base in every inning.

Steve Buckley paced the Golden Bears' offense as he was 4-for-4 at the plate with a double, three runs scored and two RBI. Eduardo Colmenares went 3-for-4 with a double, a run and five RBI, while Kevin Marciano (2-for-5), Doug Milne (2-for-4) and Matt Calzone (2-for-3) had two hits apiece.

David Cherry worked the first six innings to record his third win of the season on the mound for Western New England. Cherry (3-3) allowed three runs on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Spencer Martin worked two scoreless innings of relief giving up just a walk with a pair of strikeouts.

Travis Ritchie led the BSU batsmen with two hits in five at bats. Ritchie doubled, scored two runs and drove in one. Nick White also went 2-for-5 at the dish with a double, while Billy Mitchell came off the bench to go 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs.

Nicholas Ciuffo (1-2) took the loss on the hill as he went 3 2/3 innings and left the game with the Bears trailing 10-1. Brian Wiksten threw 92 pitches in 5 1/3 innings of relief giving up fours runs (one earned) on nine hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Six of the 14 runs allowed by BSU pitching were unearned as the Bears committed six errors.

Ciuffo, White and fellow seniors Sean Brooks, Anthony Deleo, Ryan Manning, Adam Mullen, and Chris Pessotti were honored prior to the game. The game marked the final home contest for the Bears.

In upcoming action, the Bears travel to Framingham State University on Saturday for a two o'clock MASCAC doubleheader with the Rams. The Golden Bears host RPI in a non-conference twinbill on Saturday starting at noon.
