Baseball Posts 6-2 Victory over Johnson & Wales

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Bridgewater State University baseball team downed host Johnson & Wales University, 6-2, in a non-conference contest at Pierce Field on Thursday afternoon.

Bridgewater got on the board in the top of the third when an RBI single by senior David Pierce (East Bridgewater, Mass.) scored Tory Buck (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) from third.  Buck had reached on a bunt single with two outs, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

The visiting Bears tacked on four more runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI base hit by Buck, a two-run single by Pierce and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Trevor Lawson (Easton, Mass.).

Bridgewater State added an insurance run in the top of the sixth to make it a 6-0 game. Nicholas White (Bellingham, Mass.) opened the frame with a base hit and moved to third on an errant throw by the pitcher on a pick-off attempt.  White would score on an RBI ground out by Matt Barsaleau (Holland, Mass.).

JWU threatened in the bottom of the ninth when they tallied a pair of runs and sent the tying run to the plate with the bases loaded, but it wouldn't be enough as Bridgewater held on for the 6-2 victory.

Zack Boyes (West Warwick, R.I.) went 3-for-4 for JWU while Alex Pezzuto (Hastings, N.Y.) also had a pair of hits in the loss for the Wildcats. Gian Bianchi (Johnston, R.I.) suffered the setback for JWU, allowing six runs on 10 hits in five innings of work.

Pierce was 3-for-5 at the plate with a run and three RBI while Buck also tallied a pair of hits with two runs scored in the win for the Bears.  Sean Riley (Fairhaven, Mass.) went 2-for-5 with a double and a run.

Andy Sadoski (Harwich, Mass.) notched the victory for Bridgewater State on the mound.  Sadoski (3-2) allowed two runs on eight hits over 8 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and no walks.

With the loss JWU falls to 12-8 on the season while Bridgewater State improves to 8-8-1 overall.

The Wildcats will return to action on Friday when they travel to Curry College for a non-conference contest starting at 3:30 p.m.   The Bears host Fitchburg State University in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference twinbill on Saturday at noon.
