Baseball Downs Richard Stockton, 5-4, Falls to Wesley College, 3-1

VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Bridgewater State University baseball team split a pair of games on Sunday at the Vero Beach Sports Village.  The Bears (2-2) edged Richard Stockton College, 5-4, and suffered a 3-1 setback to Wesley College.

In the 5-4 win over Richard Stockton, Andy Sadoski (Harwich, Mass.) picked up the complete game victory and Sean Riley (Fairhaven, Mass.) went 2-for-5 and drove in three runs.

Sadoski (1-0) gave up four runs on nine hits with a walk and two strikeouts over nine innings of work.

Bridgewater broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the top of the second on an RBI single by Riley.

Riley highlighted the Bears' three-run uprising in the sixth inning as he knocked in a pair of runs with a base hit. Later in the frame, David Pierce (East Bridgewater, Mass.) gave BSU a 5-1 advantage with a sacrifice fly.

Stockton rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 5-4, but Sadoski settled down and retired ten of the last 11 batters to secure the win for the Bears.

Pierce, John Garabedian (Mansfield, Mass.) and Tory Buck (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) also had multiple hits for Bridgewater.  Pierce went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Garabedian finished 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs.  Buck singled three times in four at bats, stole a base and scored a run.

The Bears maintained a 1-0 lead through seven full in the loss to Wesley.  The Wolverines, however, rallied for three run over the final two innings to pull out the victory.

BSU's Bryant Warner (Harwich, Mass.) pitched well in the loss.  Warner (0-1) went all nine innings, giving up three runs on six hits and three walks while fanning six.

Craig Stewart (Brockton, Mass.) crossed the plate in the bottom of the second to stake the Bears to the early 1-0 lead.  Stewart singled with one out, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Kevin Sugermeyer's (Hampden, Mass.) RBI single.

That lead would hold up until the top of the eighth when a leadoff walk to Trevor Mears started the Wesley rally.  After the base on balls, Mears advanced to second on a groundout and to third on a Jon Carlson base hit.  He would score, one batter later, on a fielder's choice grounder, beating the throw to the plate.

A leadoff walk would once again hurt the Bears in the top of the ninth.  Corey Jefferson reached on the free pass and advanced to second on a Steve Perone single.  The Wolverines loaded the bases on a ground ball when the Bears failed to get the lead runner.  One batter later, Wesley took the 2-1 lead as Jefferson scored on a ground out.  A walk and a hit batsmen forced in Perone with the Wolverines' third run of the game.

Jordan Lozzi went the first eight innings to record his second win of the season for Wesley.  Lozzi (2-0) scattered six hits, walked two and fanned five.

Trevor Lawson (Easton, Mass.) went 2-for-4 to lead the Bears' seven-hit attack.

Bridgewater will take on St. Mary's College (Maryland) on Monday afternoon at one at the Vero Beach Sports Village.
