Baseball Drops 10-3 Decision to Curry

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Curry College baseball team plated seven runs in the second inning as the Colonels went on to defeat the host Bears of Bridgewater State College, 10-3, on Friday afternoon at Alumni Park in Bridgewater.

Curry improves to 23-13 on the season with the non-conference victory.  Bridgewater falls to 14-14 on the year as the Bears have dropped three straight games and six of their last eight.

Junior left-hander Mike Hughes (Middleboro, MA) picked up the complete game win on the mound for the Colonels.  Hughes (6-1) allowed three runs on six hits with five walks and five strikeouts.  He induced a pair of double play ground outs and stranded eight Bridgewater State baserunners.

Seniors Tony Luciani (Weymouth, MA) and Tim Sweeney (Walpole, MA), and juniors Carlos Cornejo (Lake Forest, CA) and Brad Hawn (Chino Hills, CA), had two hits apiece to lead Curry's 13-hit attack.  They each had RBI hits and came around to score during the Colonels' seven-run second inning.

In the second, Hawn and Cornejo notched RBI singles while Luciani had a two-run base hit and Sweeney an RBI double.  Sweeney also double home a run in the ninth inning.

Freshman left-hander Keith Barry (Westford, MA) suffered the loss Bridgewater State as he is now 1-2 on the season.  Sophomore right-hander Tyler Hughes (Middleboro, MA) came on in relief of Barry and worked the last 7 2/3 innings.  Hughes gave up three runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Junior Greg Steele (North Dighton, MA) went 3-for-4 for the Bears including a two-run double.

Bridgewater State will host a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference doubleheader with MCLA on Saturday with game one of the twinbill getting underway at 1 PM.   Curry entertains Nichols College on Saturday at noon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader.
