Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Senior left-hander Marc Doyle (Whitman, MA) allowed two unearned runs over 6 2/3 innings of work to lead the visiting Suffolk University baseball team to a 5-3 victory over Bridgewater State College this afternoon at Alumni Park in Bridgewater.

Suffolk improves to 4-7 on the season while the host Bears fall to 6-5.  Bridgewater has dropped three of four games since returning from their Spring Break trip to Vero Beach, Florida.

Doyle, who threw 120 pitches, scattered eight hits, walked two and stuck out five as he evened his record at 1-1.  He allowed two unearned runs in the first inning and then settled down.  At one point he retired 11 straight batters and 13 out of 14.

Trailing 2-1 after one inning of play, Suffolk tied the game up in the top of the second on an RBI groundout by junior Mark Annese (C; Winchester, MA).  The Rams took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth on back-to-back RBI groundouts by junior Eric Del Buono (3B; Westfield, MA) and junior Mark Addesa (SS; Revere, MA).  Freshman Chris Stanley (2B; Orange County, CA) drove in Suffolk's fifth run of the game with an RBI groundout in the fifth.

Freshman righty Chris Campbell (Orchard Park, NY) came on in relief of Doyle with two outs and two runners on in the seventh and induced and inning ending fielder's choice groundout.  Campbell also hurled a scoreless eighth inning giving up just a two-out walk.

Freshman reliever Jhonneris Mendez (Roslindale, MA) picked up his first career save despite running into trouble in the ninth.  After retiring the first batter of the inning, Mendez hit BSC senior Brian Medairos (SS; Brockton, MA) and then gave up back-to-back singles to seniors Mark Claffey (3B; Bellingham, MA) and Matt Greenberg (DH; Norwell, MA). A sacrifice fly by junior Ian Williams (LF; Taunton, MA) pulled the Bears to within 5-3, but Mendez got freshman John Garabedian (CF; Mansfield, MA) to foul out to end the game.

Suffolk opened the scoring in the first as senior Rory Gentile (CF; Gloucester, MA) led off the game with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Stanley.  Bridgewater responded in the bottom half of the inning as Medairos reached on an error to lead off the frame.  A single by Claffey and a walk to Greenberg loaded the bases with nobody out.  An infield single by Williams plated Medairos with the tying run and, after a strikeout, freshman Tyler Dennis (C; Stoughton, MA) drove in Claffey from third with a sacrifice fly.

Junior right-hander Jeff Puopolo (Brockton, MA) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bears as he gave up five runs on five hits over seven innings.  Puopolo (1-2) walked two, struck out five and hit a batter as he also threw 120 pitches.

Freshman left-hander Jonathan Surette (Lynn, MA) pitched well in two innings of relief for BSC as he retired all six batters he faced while striking out two.

Claffey (2-5), Greenberg (2-4) and Williams (2-4) each had two hits apiece to lead Bridgewater's ten-hit attack.  The Bears, however, left 11 runners on base.

Doyle and junior Andrew Babb (RF; Hopkinton, MA) were the lone Rams with multiple hits.  Doyle singled and scored in the fourth and also singled in the sixth.  Babb doubled and scored in the fourth and added a base hit in the sixth.
