Baseball Blasts Clark University, 21-3

FROSTPROOF, Fla. -- On the strength of a 12-run second inning, the Bridgewater State College baseball team cruised to a 21-3 rain-shortened victory over Clark University in the opening game of a doubleheader in Frostproof, Florida.

The game was stopped in the top of the seventh inning due to rain and expected severe weather.  The second game of the twinbill was cancelled and will not be made up.

With the win, the Bears wrap up their Florida trip with a record of 5-2.  Clark falls to 3-4 with the loss.

Senior designated hitter Matt Greenberg (Norwell, MA) highlighted BSC’s 12-run inning as he belted a grand slam.  Greenberg went 1-for-2 on the day as he also walked twice to go along with his grand slam before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the fifth inning.

Sophomore second baseman Seob Yoon (Tokyo, Japan) and freshman center fielder John Garabedian (Mansfield, MA) both added two-run doubles in the frame.  Senior shortstop Brian Medairos (Brockton, MA) went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI.  Medairos opened the scoring in the top of the first  as he singled and came around to score on Garadebian’s RBI single.  He also singled in the first run of the second inning and was replaced with a pinch runner.

Yoon reached safely in all four of his plate appearances and scored three runs as he also walked twice and was hit by a pitch to go along with his two-run double.  Garabedian finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and four RBI.    

All told, the Bears banged out 13 hits in the game and were issued ten walks. 

Senior third baseman Mark Claffey (Bellingham, MA) went 4-for-4 with his first career home run, three runs scored and five RBI.  Freshman catcher Keane Costa (Fairhaven, MA) notched a pair of doubles in four at bats as he scored two runs and drove in two.

Junior right-hander Jeff Puopolo (Brockton, MA) was the beneficiary of all the run support as he worked the first five inning to earn his first win of the season.  Puopolo (1-1) allowed three runs on six hits with four walks and eight strikeouts.  Freshman left-hander Jonathan Surette (Lynn, MA) set down the side in order in the sixth including a strikeout.
