Baseball Sweeps Twinbill with Wisconsin Lutheran

VERO BEACH, Fla. -- The Bridgewater State College baseball team swept a doubleheader with Wisconsin Lutheran College this afternoon at the RussMatt Dodgertown Invitational in Vero Beach, Florida.

The Bears (4-2) erupted for a 14-1 win in the opener and completed the sweep with an 8-2 victory in game two.

In game one, freshman right-hander Bryant Warner (Harwich, MA) went the distance in his first collegiate start as he scattered six hits over seven innings.  Warner (1-0) allowed just the one run with four walks and ten strikeouts.

The Bears’ offense came alive with 14 runs on ten hits, five walks and two hits batsmen.  Bridgewater scored a run in the first inning, two in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and put the game well out of reach with an eight-run sixth inning.

Senior catcher Matt Greenberg (Norwell, MA) reached safely three times as he went 1-for-2 with a double, two walks, three runs scored and two RBI.

Senior shortstop Brian Medairos (Brockton, MA), junior  outfielders Ian Williams (Taunton, MA) and Greg Steele (North Dighton, MA), and freshman first baseman David Pierce (East Bridgewater, MA) all had two hits apiece in the opener.  Medairos went 2-for-3 with a walk, three runs and a stolen base; Williams was 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple, a run and three runs batted in; Steele went 2-for-3 with a triple a run and two RBI; Pierce finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

In game two, freshman left-hander Keith Barry (Westford, MA), who was making his collegiate debut, also went the distance giving up two runs on five hits over seven innings with two walks and seven strikeouts.

The Bears held a 2-0 lead after three innings of play, but pushed across six runs in the fourth to take a commanding 8-0 lead.  Wisconsin Lutheran (0-4) got on the board with a run in the fifth and tacked on another one in the seventh to round out the scoring.

Medairos had another multi-hit game as he went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.  Freshman outfielders John Garabedian (Mansfield, MA) and Tory Buck (Shelburne Falls, MA) also had two hits apiece.  Garabedian was 2-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base, while Buck went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI.

Also highlighting the offensive attack in game two were Greenberg, fellow seniors Mark Claffey (3B; Bellingham, MA) and Tom Couet (1B; East Freetown, MA), and junior second baseman Paul Politsopoulos (Foxboro, MA).  Greenberg was 1-for-3 with an RBI triple; Claffey went 1-for-3 with an RBI triple and a sacrifice fly; Couet finished 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly, a run scored and two RBI; Politsopoulos was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
