Baseball Sweeps Past Becker College

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Bridgewater State College Baseball team swept a doubleheader with non-conference foe Becker College this afternoon at Alumni Park in Bridgewater. 

The Bears (23-14) won the first game, 13-1, and completed the sweep with a 9-2 victory over the Hawks (13-13-1) in the nightcap.

Sophomore Jeff Puopolo (Brockton, MA) earned the win on the mound for the Bears in game one.  Puopolo (4-3) allowed a run on three hits over four innings of work with a walk and two strikeouts.

Becker pitching allowed seven hits and 13 walks in the opener while hitting two batters.  Bridgewater also stole nine bases in game one.

Senior Brendon Elliot (Brockton, MA) continued his hot hitting as he went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and seven RBI.  Elliot belted a three-run home run in a six-run third inning, and doubled in three runs to highlight a four-run fourth inning.

Senior Brad Koneski (North Dighton, MA) went 2-for-2 with four runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases.  Koneski has 11 steals in the last five games and is a perfect 22-for-22 in stolen base attempts this season.

Senior Dave Liffers (Norwell, MA) got the win in game two.  Liffers (3-3) went the first six innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Elliot was 3-for-4 at the plate in the nightcap as he hit his team-leading seventh home run of the season. Elliot scored three runs, drove in two and also stole a base.

Puopolo, who caught the second game after pitching the first, went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Senior Tom Couet (East Freetown, MA) finished 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored.

Sophomore Jario Valdez (Lynn, MA) went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored in game one and also had a hit in game two for Becker.

Bridgewater will compete in the MASCAC Tournament this week.  The Bears, who are seeded second in the four-team, double-elimination tournament, will host third-seeded MCLA on Thursday at 3 PM.  Becker hosts Johnson & Wales University in a non-conference game on Tuesday at 3:30.
