Baseball Drops 4-3 Decision to UMass Dartmouth

Box Score

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State College baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision to host UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex.

UMass broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning as sophomore left fielder Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, MA) roped a hit-and-run single up the middle and sophomore catcher Zac Talis (Lynnfield, MA) came all the way around to score from first base as the ball got by the BSC center fielder.

Freshman designated hitter David Dole (West Bridgewater, MA) singled in a run in the first inning to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. The Corsairs took the lead back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring twice on an RBI single by junior center fielder Jeff Macchi (Franklin, MA) and Talis' RBI grounder. Sophomore shortstop Pat McDonough (North Weymouth, MA) made it 3-1 in favor of UMD with a run-scoring single in the second inning, but BSC junior catcher Matt Greenberg (Norwell, MA) hit a two-run homer in the third to tie the game.

Corsair sophomore right-hander Shane Campbell (Marlboro, MA) limited the Bears to two base-runners in the next three innings, and got the first two outs in the seventh before senior second baseman Brad Koneski (North Dighton, MA) walked and senior center fielder J.T. Mooney (North Attleboro, MA) doubled. Junior Nial Mitchell (Rehoboth, MA) relieved Campbell and induced a ground out to shortstop to end the threat, then retired the side in order in the eighth and ninth innings to earn his first save of the season.

Campbell allowed seven hits in 6 2/3 innings, walking two and striking out four to earn his first win against two losses. Senior Dave Liffers (Norwell, MA) allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits in six innings of work with a walk and three strikeouts.

UMD improved to 1-11 with the victory, while Bridgewater dropped to 7-7 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Wheaton Thursday afternoon. The Bears will host Suffolk on Thursday.
