Baseball Knocks Off UMass Boston, 25-7

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Bridgewater State College baseball team defeated UMass Boston, 25-7, this afternoon from BSC's Alumni Park in Bridgewater.

With the win, the Bears improve to 7-6 on the season, while the loss drops the Beacons to 2-10.

Jeff Puopolo (Brockton, MA) hurled seven scoreless innings to earn his first collegiate win for the Bears.  Puopolo (1-2) allowed just two hits, walked two and struck out six.

BSC put the game away early with seven runs in the second inning and seven more in the third. The Bears added eight more runs in the sixth and three in the eighth.

Brendon Elliot (Brockton, MA) led Bridgewater's 22-hit attack as he was 4-for-7 at the plate with a double, three runs scored and four RBI.  Along with the 22 hits, BSC batters were also issued seven walks and were hit by a pitch five times.

J.T. Mooney (North Attleboro, MA) went 3-for-5 with a pair of triples, four runs scored and two runs batted in. Matt Greenberg (Norwell, MA) finished 2-for-6 with a double, two runs and five RBI.  Greenberg also belted his first home run of the season, a two-run blast in the seven-run third inning.

Mark Claffey (Bellingham, MA) had two doubles in three official at bats as he scored four runs, drove in two and was also walked four times.  David Dole (West Bridgewater, MA) went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs, while Greg Steele (North Dighton, MA) finished 3-for-5 and scored a pair of runs.

Seob Yoon (Tokyo, Japan) came off the bench to go 2-for-3 with three RBI.  He singled in his first and bat and belted a bases loaded triple in the Bears' eight-run sixth inning.

Mark McCormack (Shelton, CT), Tim Fontaine (Worcester, MA), Ryan Oshima (LaJolla, CA) and Drew Tambling (Sterling, MA) had two hits apiece for UMass.  McCormack went 2-for-5 and scored two runs, while Fontaine finished 2-for-5 with a triple, a run and two RBI.  Oshima had two hits in four at bats with two runs scored.  Tambling came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with a triple, a run and four RBI.

UMass spoiled the Bears shutout bid with seven runs in the final two innings.  The Beacons plated four runs in the eighth inning highlighted by Tambling's pinch hit two-run triple.  UMass pushed across three more in the ninth with Tambling driving in a pair of runs with a single.

Bridgewater returns to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon as the Bears travel to UMass Dartmouth for a 3:30 game with the Corsairs.
