Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Bridgewater State College sent 15 players to the plate, scoring 10 runs on seven hits, as the Bears went on to defeat Rhode Island College, 11-4, in collegiate baseball action on Monday afternoon at Anchorman Field.

Rhode Island College started out with a three-run second inning, capped by RBI-doubles by junior center fielder B.J. Doyon (Douglas, MA) and classmate third baseman Jeff Costa (Pawtucket, RI).

Bridgewater State (11-5) junior starting pitcher David Liffers (Norwell, MA) took over from there, throwing 132 pitches over six innings of work to pick up his second (2-1) win of the season. Liffers allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits, while recording three strikeouts in his outing.

Sophomore Ben Altman (East Taunton, MA) and senior Brian Schilling (Weymouth, MA) combined to shut down out RIC (13-7) over the final three innings, allowing just one hit, while striking out five.

The Bears pounced on Rhode Island College junior starting pitcher Bruce Celico (Westerly, RI) in the top of the third. Sophomore third baseman Mike Claffey (Bellingham, MA) led off with a walk and senior first baseman Jarrett Mooney (North Attleboro, MA) followed with a majestic home run (1) over the left field fence. Bridgewater State kept the runs coming as Mooney contributed a two-run single in his second at-bat of the frame. Celico (2-3) was chased after just two innings of work, allowing four earned runs on four hits and four walks.

RIC sophomore reliever Mike Boucher (Woonsocket, RI) was the Anchormen's hero on the day, throwing a career-high 6.1 innings during his outing, while limiting the Bears to just one more run over the course of the game.

Mooney led BSC offensively, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, four RBI and a home run. Senior left fielder Steve Smith (East Taunton, MA) notched a game-high four hits, going 4-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Smith now has 204 hits in his oustanding four-year career at Bridgewater State.  He needs just 12 hits to break Ed Grueter's BSC career mark of 215 hits set back in 1991.

Doyon led the Anchormen, going 2-for-3 with one run scored, two RBI and a double.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume the Little East Conference schedule tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. when it hosts UMass Dartmouth. Bridgewater State will play at Wheaton on Wednesday, Apr. 9 at 4 p.m.
