BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- In MASCAC baseball
action, host Bridgewater State College split a doubleheader with
Salem State this afternoon at Alumni Park in Bridgewater. Behind a
magnificent pitching performance by senior Martin
Anderson (Meriden, CT) the Bears took game one, 7-0. The
Vikings earned a split with a 7-5 decision to take the
nightcap.
With the split, Bridgewater State’s is 10-5 overall and 2-2
in the MASCAC while Salem State sits at 15-7 and 3-1 in the
league.
In game one, Anderson went the distance notching his second
complete-game shutout in as many starts extending his scoreless
innings streak to 14 innings. Anderson (2-1) scattered eight hits
while striking out seven batters and allowing one walk in seven
innings of work.
Senior righthander Scott Lynch (Malden, MA)
suffered his first loss of the season on the mound for the Vikings.
Lynch (4-1) went 4 2/3 innings giving up six runs on nine hits
while striking out five batters. He also allowed four walks and hit
three batters.
Bridgewater State jumped on the board first scoring a pair of runs
in the top of the first inning on a two-run single by junior
Dave Kiloski (Lowell, MA-1B).
BSC added another run in the bottom of the fourth when senior
Steve Smith (East Taunton, MA-LF) drove in
sophomore Mark Claffey (Bellingham, MA-3B), who
reached on a triple.
Up 3-0, the Bears broke the game open scoring four more runs over
the next two innings highlighted by Claffey, who plated two runs in
the fifth and an RBI single by sophomore Brian
Medairos (Brockton, MA-SS) in the sixth.
In game two, junior Al Miner (Rochester, MA)
earned the win for the Vikings. Miner went the distance allowing
five runs on 12 hits to go along with five walks in seven
innings.
Freshman Greg Potts (Milton, MA) suffered his
first loss of the season for the Bears. Potts (2-1) went five
innings allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits while
striking out five. Potts also gave up four walks.
Potts was relieved by junior Tim Bonham
(Marshfield, MA) and senior Brian Schilling
(Weymouth, MA) who each allowed one run in their two combined
innings of work.
Salem broke into the scoring column first with a run on a
bases-loaded fielder’s choice in the top of the third.
Bridgewater took the 3-1 lead in the bottom of the frame,
highlighted by a two-run triple by Smith.
The Vikings responded and tied the game 3-3 when senior
Mark Crovo (Melrose, MA-C) plated two runs in the
top of the fourth inning.
Salem scored the go-ahead run when senior Ken
Luongo (Wilmington, MA-DH) drove in junior Rob
Coppola (Revere, MA-1B) in the top of the fifth.
The Vikings scored three more runs over the next two innings,
highlighted by an RBI double by senior Mark
Addessa (Revere, MA-3B) in the sixth and a solo home run
by Louongo in the seventh.
Bridgewater State rallied for two runs in the bottom of the
seventh. The Bears also threatened to score with runners on first
and second and two outs trailing 7-5, but Miner set down the last
batter he faced on a strikeout to end the game.
For BSC on the afternoon, Smith went 3-for-5 with a pair of walks,
two runs, and four RBI’s while Hansen went 4-for-6 with a run
scored and two RBI’s. In game two, Claffey went 3-for-5 while
Kiloski was a perfect 2-for-2 with one walk. Both Claffey and
Kiloski each crossed the plate twice and plated two runs.
Smith's triple in the fourth inning of game two of the doubleheader
was the 200th hit of his career. Smith joins
Ed Grueter (215 hits) as the only two players in
BSC baseball history to reach the 200-hit milestone.
Sophomore Ben Garlington (Rochester, MA) paced
the Vikings going 4-for-7 with two runs scored while Addessa went
3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. In the second game, Luongo was
2-for-4, finishing with one run scored and an RBI.
Bridgewater State will have three road games in the next week. The
Bears will play Rhode Island College at 3:30 P.M. on Monday,
nationally-ranked Wheaton at 4 o’clock on Wednesday and
Brandeis on Friday at 3.
The Vikings will entertain Becker on Monday, Gordon on Tuesday and
Nichols on Wednesday. All games are slated for 3 P.M. starts.
