BRIDGEWATER, Mass. --- Freshman righthander
Greg Potts (Milton, MA) gave up one run over six
innings and the Bridgewater State College baseball team combined
for 18 hits as the Bears cruised to an 11-4 victory over visiting
Suffolk this afternoon at Alumni Park. BSC improves to 7-2 with the
win while the Rams fall to 8-4 with the loss.
Potts picked up his second win of the season after scattering three
hits to go along with five strikeouts and three walks. Before
allowing a solo home-run in the top of the sixth, Potts retired 19
of the first 22 batters he faced.
Senior Steve Smith (East Taunton, MA-LF)
highlighted seven Bears who finished the game with more than two
hits. Smith went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, an RBI single in the
first and a solo-homerun in the third inning. The home-run was
Smith’s team-leading fourth home run this season.
Junior Kenny Downey (Braintree, MA-2B) was 3-for-4
and a home-run shy of the cycle as he added a triple in the second,
an RBI double in the third and a single in the seventh inning.
Downey also finished the game with three runs scored. Kelly
LaDow (East Falmouth, MA-C) went 3-for-5 with two runs
scored while sophomore Brian Medairos (Brockton,
MA-SS) crossed the plate once and added a team-best three
RBI’s.
Sophomore Mark Claffey (Bellingham, MA-3B) was
2-for-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored while senior
John Lombardi (Taunton, MA-DH) went 2-for-2 off
the bench with a run scored. Sophomore Brad
Koneski (N. Dighton, MA-CF) plated a run in the third,
crossed home plate in the seventh and finished the game 2-for-3.
Senior designated hitter Dana Hansen (Hanover,
MA-DH) finished the game going 1-for-1 with two walks, an RBI and a
run scored.
Suffolk scored in the sixth when junior Nick
Chioffi (So. Burlington, VT-2B) belted a pinch-hit
home-run in the sixth inning. The Rams scored three more times in
the eighth highlighted by a two-run home-run by senior Nick
Martinho (Middleton, MA-DH).
Junior right-hander Tim Doyle (Milton, MA) took
the loss on the mound for Suffolk. Doyle (1-1) went 2 1/3 innings
giving up seven runs on eight hits while allowing two walks. After
Doyle left the game, the Ram’s bullpen gave up five runs
(four earned) on ten hits over the next 6 2/3 innings.
The Bears will play their MASCAC opener this weekend versus rival
Worcester State on Saturday or Sunday afternoon, depending on the
weather forecast. Senior right-hander Martin
Anderson (Meriden, CT) will get the start game 1 while
junior Dave Liffers (Norwell, MA) pitch the
night-cap of the twinbill.
