Women's Cross Country Opens 2021 Season at Wheaton Quad

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's cross country team opened the 2021 season at a quad meet hosted by Wheaton College at the Mark Coogan Cross Country Course in Attleboro.

Junior Julie Glavin (Weymouth, Mass.) placed fourth out of a field of 38 runners to pace the Bears. Glavin covered the two-mile course in a time of 12:30.

Sophomore Ashley Schepis (Norton, Mass.) was the next BSU harrier to cross the finish line as she checked in with a time of 13:22 to place 14th overall, while classmate Elisabeth Sweeney (Marshfield, Mass.) finished 22nd with a time of 13:43. Both Schepis and Sweeney were making their collegiate debuts.

Senior Megan Leary (North Attleboro, Mass.) and junior Maura Bruns (Franklin, Mass.) rounded out the Bears' top five finishers as they placed 25th (13:56) and 26th (14:01), respectively.

Bridgewater State placed second in the team standings with a score of 68. Wheaton easily outdistance the field with a low score of 17.

The Lyons had the top three runners at the meet as sophomore Katie Lavoie (Dudley, Mass.) captured the individual title with a time of 12:15. Lavoie edged out teammates Maddie Shea (Fr., Amherst, Mass.) and Katherine Leckbee (Sr., Bowdoin, Maine) by two and three seconds, respectively.

Following a weekend off, the BSU women's cross country team will compete at the 48th Annual UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday, September 18th.
