Volleyball Posts 3-0 MASCAC Win over Mass. Maritime

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Sophomore outside hitter Abigail Reardon (Fairhaven, Mass.) recorded a career-high 12 kills to lead the Bridgewater State University volleyball team to a 3-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) win over visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Tuesday evening at the Tinsley Center. The Bears won by set scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-11.

The Bears improve to 6-6 on the season and 3-1 in the MASCAC, while the Buccaneers fall to 1-16 overall and 0-4 in conference play. Bridgewater State remains unbeaten against the Buccaneers as the Bears hold a 38-0 lead in the all-time series which dates back to 1993.

Reardon, the reigning MASCAC Rookie of the Week, posted a match-best .478 hitting percentage to go along with a solo block. Junior libero Victoria Caiano (Acushnet, Mass.), the reigning MASCAC Player of the Week, added 15 digs and three aces for the Bears, while junior setter Savannah Quintal (Assonet, Mass.) checked in with a match-high 11 assists and four aces, and senior middle hitter Sydney Rice (Medway, Mass.) registered seven kills, a .333 hitting percentage, three digs and an ace. Senior outside Gabryella Serrano (Bridgewater, Mass.) contributed four kills, 11 digs and a pair of aces for the hosts.

The Bears finished with 30 kills, a .061 hitting percentage, 42 digs  and 12 aces on the evening. The BSU defensive effort limited the Buccaneers to just nine kills and a -.167 hitting percentage for the match.

Sophomore outside hitter Ameena Freeman (Columbus, Ohio) paced Mass. Maritime with a match-best 16 digs, while junior libero Isabelle Miazga (Rocky Hill, Conn.) added 11 digs. Junior outside hitter Alexa Smith (Shippensburg, Pa.) registered three aces for the visitors, and freshman right side hitter Marlo Sim (Groton, Conn.) notched three kills, five digs and an aces. Senior middle hitter Tegan Murray (Plum Island, Mass.) led all players with three solo blocks and tallied a pair of kills.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday. The Bears travel to MASCAC rival Westfield State University for am 11:00 AM tri-match with the Owls and Elms College. The Buccaneers host conference foe Worcester State University at 5:00 PM.
