Women's Track & Field Competes at 13th Annual Eastern Invitational

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- The Bridgewater State University women's outdoor track & field team placed second in the team standings on Friday at the 13th Annnual Eastern Invitational hosted by Eastern Connecticut State University.

The Bears registered 178 points at the meet. Host Eastern Connecticut won the meet with 182 points.

Sophomore Serenity Sands (East Bridgewater, Mass.) captured top honors in both the 100-meter hurdles and high jump to lead the way for Bridgewater State at the meet. Sands won the hurdles with a season-best time of 15.51 seconds as she qualified for the Division III New England Championships in the event. Sands also posted a winning height of five feet, 3.75 inches (1.62m) in the high jump.

Senior Camille Hanna (Milton, Vt.) placed first in the pole vault with a mark of ten feet (3.05m), while freshman Tristen Gomes (Middleborough, Mass.) won the triple jump with a career-best mark of 35 feet, 5.25 inches (10.80m) and placed third in the long jump with a career-best leap of 16 feet, 3.75 inches (4.97m).

Senior Ashley Garvey (Woburn, Mass.) captured top honors in the discus throw with a season-best toss of 116 feet, six inches (35.51m). Garvey also placed second in both the shot put (32'2"/9.80m) and hammer throw (121'9"/37.10m).

Senior Megan Weatherbee (West Bridgewater, Mass.) finished third in the shot put with a distance of 32 feet, 0.25 inches (9.76m), while classmate Malika Cruickshank (Boston, Mass.) was third in the hammer throw (119'3"/36.36m).

Sophomore Juliana Patrone (Wilmington, Mass.) and junior Lindsey Golden (Mansfield, Mass.) finished second and third, respectively, in the high jump. Patrone equaled her career best with a mark of four feet, 11.75 inches (1.52m), while Golden jumped four feet, 9.75 inches (1.47m). Golden also placed third in the 400-meter dash with a career-best time of 1:03.94.

Junior Lily Marra (Lakeville, Mass.) placed second in the 400 (1:02.57) and third in the 200-meter dash (26.90). Marra posted career-best times in both events.

Freshman Cheyenne Nelson (East Bridgewater, Mass.) placed third and qualified for DIII New Englands in the 100-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 16.32 seconds. 

Sophomore Maura Bruns (Franklin, Mass.) finished second in the 3,000-meter run with a career-best time of 11:42.84, while sophomore Rachel Balboni (Lakeville, Mass.) was third in the 100-meter dash (13.35).

Several members of the BSU women's outdoor track & field team will compete tomorrow at the Tufts Sunshine Classic.
