Women’s Track & Field Competes at Massasoit Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's track & field team competed at the non-scoring Massasoit Classic hosted by Springfield College on Saturday at the Springfield Field House.

Junior Alison McDonough (Halifax, Mass.) placed third in the 60-meter hurdles with a Division III New England Championships qualifying time of 9.38 seconds in the finals. McDonough also placed fourth in the 60-meter dash with a finals time of 8.26 seconds. Classmate Abbi Peterson (Watertown, Mass.) checked in with a third-place performance in the high jump with a DIII New Englands qualifying leap of five feet, 3.25 inches (1.61m). Freshman Tristen Gomes (Middleboro, Mass.) qualified for DIII New Englands and placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 34 feet, 9.5 inches (10.60m).

Freshman Kiara Abrantes (Somerset, Mass.) and junior Allison Raposo (Cumberland, R.I.) added third-place showings in the 400-meter dash (1:02.96) and 800-meter run (2:33.39), respectively. Abrantes also finished fourth in the 200-meter dash (27.53).

The Bears' relay squad featuring Abrantes, Raposo, junior Lily Marra (Lakeville, Mass.) and sophomore Nicole Major (Andover, Mass.) placed second in the 4x400 with a time of 4:25.53.

Senior Camille Hanna (Milton, Vt.) broke her own school record and placed fourth in the pole vault with a height of nine feet, 2.25 inches (2.80m). Hanna eclipsed her previous mark of eight feet, 6.25 inches (2.60m) set back in December at the Art Kaddish Elm City Challenge.

Senior Ashley Garvey (Woburn, Mass.), junior Jailene Escalera (Rockland, Mass.) and sophomore Maura Bruns (Franklin, Mass.) added fourth-place performances for the Bears, respectively, in the weight throw (39'7"/12.06m), long jump (16'3"/4.95m) and 5,000-meter run (21:09.07).

Bridgewater State finished third in the team standings with 102 points. Host Springfield captured the meet title with 185 points, while AIC placed second with 124 points.

Next Saturday, the Bears will compete at the Branwen Smith-King Invitational hosted by Tufts University.
