Women's Tennis Bests Curry for 9th Straight Win

MILTON, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team extended its winning streak to nine matches as the Bears posted an 8-1 victory over Curry College on Thursday afternoon at the Trent J. Scott Courts on the Curry campus.

The Bears improve to 11-2 on the season, while the host Colonels fall to 2-12 with their tenth straight setback. The match marked the season finale for Curry.

Bridgewater State swept the three doubles matches, all by identical 8-0 scores, and captured five of the six singles flights to earn the win.

In doubles play, freshman Madeline Von Ruden (Ashley Falls, Mass.) and sophomore Abigail Ramer (Sherwood, Ore.) earned the victory at number one, while graduate student Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) and junior Mackenzie Silveira (Middletown, R.I.) teamed up for the win at the second flight. Junior Brianna Venditti (North Smithfield, R.I.) and sophomore Erin Lally (Danvers, Mass.) paired up for the triumph at number three.

Sweeney (6-2, 6-2), Ramer (6-0, 6-1), Venditti (6-2, 6-1) and Silveira (6-1, 6-2) added straight set singles wins for the Bears at the second through fifth flights, respectively. Junior Catie Ledwidge (Somerset, Mass.) cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 straight set victory at number six to round out Bridgewater's point producers.  

Lally and Ledwidge recorded their first career wins as they were both making their collegiate debuts.

Sophomore Alexandra Borkov (Newton, Mass.) recorded the Colonels' lone point of the match with a 6-0, 6-1 straight set decision at first singles.

The Bears wrap up regular season play on Saturday (1:00 PM) when they travel to Plymouth State University for a key Little East Conference (LEC) match with the Panthers. The winner of the match earns the #2 seed as well as a first round bye in next week's Little East Tournament.

Notes: Venditti has won nine straight singles matches and is now 11-2 on the season...Sweeney improved to 9-3 in singles play this season with her eighth straight victory...Ramer (8-4) recorded her seventh straight win in singles competion...Sweeney (10-2) and Silveira (10-3) both picked up their team-leading tenth doubles triumph of the 2021 campaign...Venditti improved to 8-1 in doubles play.
