Women's Tennis Posts 7-2 Senior Day Win Over Suffolk

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team posted a 7-2 victory over visiting Suffolk University on Senior Day at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Bears improve to 9-2 on the season with their seventh straight win, while the Rams fall to 2-6. Bridgewater State is now 11-1 versus Suffolk since 2009 and 8-0 at home.

Following the match, the Bears honored graduate student Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) and senior Vanessa Rosa (Taunton, Mass.).

Bridgewater captured two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles flight to earn the win.

In doubles play, Sweeney and Rosa breezed to an 8-1 win at the second flight, while the junior tandem of Brianna Venditti (North Smithfield, R.I.) and Mackenzie Silveira (Middletown, R.I.) teamed up for an 8-2 triumph at number three. The Sweeney/Rosa combination remains unbeaten in doubles competition with a perfect 7-0 mark.

The Rams lone doubles point came at number one as graduate student Sarah Mezini (Lynnfield, Mass.) and senior Ilda Ascic (Sarajevo, Bosnia) recorded an 8-4 decision.

Mezini also added a 6-0, 6-0 straight set victory at number one singles to even the match at 2-2.

BSU sophomore Allison Carter (Raynham, Mass.) notched a 6-0, 6-1 straight set win at number six singles to give the Bears a 3-2 lead. Sweeney followed with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph at the second flight, before Rosa secured the decisive fifth point with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at number three. Venditti tallied a 6-0, 6-1 win at the fifth spot, while sophomore Abigail Ramer (Sherwood, Ore.) rounded out the BSU singles victors with a 6-1, 6-4 decision at the fourth flight.

In upcoming action, the Bears travel to Salem State University on Tuesday afternoon for a 3:30 Little East Conference (LEC) match with the Vikings. The Rams entertain Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) foe Gordon College next Saturday afternoon at four.
