Women's Tennis Posts 9-0 Win over Western Connecticut

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 Little East Conference (LEC) victory over visiting Western Connecticut State University on Wednesday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Bears improve to 7-2 on the season and 5-1 in the Little East with their fifth straight win, while WestConn falls to 3-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play. Bridgewater State is now 16-2 versus WestConn since the Bears joined the LEC in 2004.

Bridgewater swept the three doubles matches and captured each of the six singles flights.

In doubles play, freshman Madeline Von Ruden (Ashley Falls, Mass.) and sophomore Abigail Ramer (Sherwood, Ore.) teamed up for an 8-1 win at number one, while graduate student Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) and senior Vanessa Rosa (Taunton, Mass.) combined for an 8-3 triumph at the second flight. The Bears junior tandem of Brianna Venditti (North Smithfield, R.I.) and Mackenzie Silveira (Middletown, R.I.) rounded out the doubles scoring with an 8-0 decision at the third spot.

The Sweeney/Rosa second flight doubles combination is a perfect 5-0 (4-0 LEC) on the season.

Von Ruden (6-2, 6-2), Sweeney (6-2, 6-2), Rosa (6-0, 6-1), Ramer (6-0, 6-3), Venditti (6-0, 6-1) and sophomore Allison Carter (Raynham, Mass.) added straight set wins in singles play for Bridgewater State at the first through sixth flights, respectively. Carter won her number six singles match, 6-0, 6-2.

Venditti and Carter are both 7-2 on the season in singles play and 5-1 against Little East opponents.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Clark University for a three o'clock match with the Cougars. WestConn travels to Rhode Island College on Friday afternoon for a 3:30 Little East match with the Anchorwomen.
