Women's Tennis Posts 6-3 Win Over LEC Foe UMass Boston

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's tennis team posted a 6-3 Little East Conference (LEC) victory over visiting UMass Boston on Wednesday afternoon at the Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Bears improve to 4-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Little East, while the Beacons fall to 2-2 overall with a 1-2 mark in conference play. Bridgewater State is 16-1 versus the Beacons since 2005 and 9-1 at home.

The Bears captured two of the three doubles matches and four of the six singles flights to secure the win.

In doubles play, BSU graduate student Olivia Sweeney (Taunton, Mass.) and senior Vanessa Rosa (Taunton, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-4 triumph at the second flight, while the Bears' junior pairing of Brianna Venditti (North Smithfield, R.I.) and Mackenzie Silveira (Middletown, R.I.) recorded an 8-2 win at number three.

Sophomores Meagan Carney (Arlington, Mass.) and Lydia Chan (Quincy, Mass.) notched the lone doubles point for the Beacons with an 8-6 decision at the top flight.

Sweeney, Rosa and Venditti also picked up straight set singles victories for the Bears at the second (6-1, 6-2), third (6-2, 6-0) and fifth (6-1, 6-2) flights, respectively. Sophomore Allison Carter (Raynham, Mass.) rounded out the Bears' point producers with a 6-2, 6-2 straight set win at number six singles.

Carney battled to a 6-0, 7-5 triumph in the battle of the top flight singles players. Junior Lia Vassiliades (Weymouth, Mass.) claimed a point for the Beacons at number four as she split the first two sets, 6-4, 4-6, before winning the flight in a tie-breaker, 11-9.

Both teams are back in action on Thursday afternoon. The Bears host the Lions of Eastern Nazarene College at three o'clock, while the Beacons travel to Roger Williams for a four o'clock match with the Hawks.
