Women's Soccer Drops 3-2 Decision to Worcester State in MASCAC Semifinals

WORCESTER, Mass. – Second-seeded Worcester State University overcame a two-goal halftime deficit as the second-seeded Lancers posted a 3-2 victory over #3 Bridgewater State University in the semifinal round of the 2021 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women's Soccer Tournament on Friday evening at Coughlin Field.

The Lancers (9-6-2) will be making the program's second straight MASCAC Championship Game appearance and 13th overall. The Bears end the season with an overall record of 9-8-1. Worcester will take on top-seeded Westfield State University in the conference title game on Sunday afternoon.

BSU junior midfielder Michelle Belcher (Norton, Mass.) tucked a shot under the crossbar from just outside the 18 to stake the Bears to a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute. Sophomore forward Audra McDuffie (Millbury, Mass.) assisted on Belcher's team-leading 11th goal of the season.

Senior forward Madelyn Morin (East Longmeadow, Mass.) made it a 2-0 game in the 37th minute as she converted off a perfect feed from Sydney Sousa (Dartmouth, Mass,). In transition, Sousa slipped a pass to a wide-open Morin on the right side who beat the Worcester keeper with a shot inside the far post.  Morin, who now has seven goals on the season, has scored in four straight games.

The Bears would take the 2-0 lead into the intermission.

The Lancers cut the deficit in half just 33 seconds into the second half. Grad defender Jordan Bailey (Monson, Mass.) headed home a corner attempt sent into the box by senior midfielder Megan Gurlitz (Auburn, Mass.). For Bailey, the goal marked her first of the season.

Another header goal off a Gurlitz corner kick in the 69th minute knotted the score at 2-2. Senior forward Ali Maldonado (Rutland, Mass.) sent the header into the left side of the cage for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Sophomore defender Ella Tatarczuk (Bedford, Mass.) potted the game-winner with 5:11 remaining in the contest as she headed home a perfectly placed crossing pass from Maldonado.

Worcester finished with a 16-10 shot advantage for the game as well as an 8-4 edge in corner kicks attempts.

Senior Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) turned aside four shots to record her ninth win of the season for Worcester State. Senior netminder Tory Viola-Laughery (Brockton, Mass.) also made four saves between the pipes for the Bridgewater State.
