Women's Soccer Advances to MASCAC Semifinals with 2-1 Win over Fitchburg State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Third-seeded Bridgewater State University posted a 2-1 victory over #6 Fitchburg State University in the quarterfinal round of the 2021 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women's Soccer Tournament on Tuesday night at Swenson Field.

With the win, the Bears (9-7-1) advance to the tournament semifinal round as they will travel to Worcester State University on Friday evening to take on the second-seeded Lancers at six o'clock. The Falcons end the 2021 season with an overall record of 2-14-1.

Senior midfielder Delaney Langton (Scituate, R.I.) got Bears on the board in the 29th minute with her third goal of the season. Langton drove a shot into the top right corner of the net from 25 yards out with sophomore defender Megan Keller (Northborough, Mass.) and senior forward Madelyn Morin (East Longmeadow, Mass.) picking up the assists.

Morin converted off a thru-ball from junior midfielder Michelle Belcher (Norton, Mass.) in the 34th minute to extend the lead to 2-0. Belcher slipped a pass between two defenders and Morin, coming in from the left side, beat the keeper with a tough angle shot inside the near post. Senior defender Samantha Tomaszewski (Sterling, Mass.) also assisted on the strike.

Grad midfielder Shannon McCarthy (Chicopee, Mass.) converted a penalty kick in the 88th minute to break up the shutout bid. The goal marked McCarthy's team-leading sixth of the season.

Bridgewater State finished with a 40-8 shot advantage as well as a 5-3 edge in corner kick attempts. Seven of the Falcons eight shots and all three corner kicks came in the second half.

Senior goalkeeper Tory Viola-Laughery (Brockton, Mass.) turned aside five shots to record her ninth win of the season. Four of Viola-Laughery's five saves came in the second half including three impressive stops to keep the Falcons off the board until the PK.

Junior netminder Allison Gough (Wolcott, Conn.) made 19 saves on the evening to keep the Falcons within striking distance.
