Women's Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision to UMass Boston

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The visiting UMass Boston women's soccer team edged Bridgewater State University, 1-0, on Tuesday afternoon at rain-soaked Swenson Field.

The Beacons improve to 11-5-2 on the season with the win, while the host Bears fall to 6-7-1. UMass now holds an 8-2-1 advantage in the all-time series as the two teams first met in 2010.

Freshman midfielder Maggie Kelley (Paxton, Mass.) got the Beacons on the board with her eight goal of the season in the 21st minute. After collecting a short crossing pass from senior defender Mary Jo Murphy (Worcester, Mass.), Kelley fired a shot from the top of the 18 that glanced off the right post and into the back of the net.

The Bears nearly knotted the score in the 51st minute as senior midfielder Cassie Brown (Augusta, Maine) rang one off the post from the top of the 18.

BSU senior goalkeeper Tory Viola-Laughery (Brockton, Mass.) turned aside eight shots in the setback. Viola-Laughery made three key stops in the last five minutes of the contest to keep it a one-goal game.

UMass held a 23-8 shot advantage on the afternoon, while Bridgewater finished with a 4-3 edge in corner kick attempts. Three of the Bears' corners came in the second half.

Senior netminder Caroline Richards (Duxbury, Mass.) made two saves between the pipes for the Beacons as she recorded her second win and first shutout of the season.

The Bears entertain Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) foe Salem State University on Thursday night at seven. The Beacons wrap up regular season play on Saturday afternoon when they host Little East Conference (LEC) rival Castleton University at four o'clock.
